About agape

After two years of searching, we found our dream boat down in Baja California! We came across her while visiting friends in Mexico before they made the puddle jump (sail from Cabo to the Marquesas, 3000 miles away).

We had been looking at boats in California, from San Francisco to San Diego, with no real luck. While in Mexico we decided to extend our search south of the border in the chance there was a hidden gem. Sure enough, there was a newly posted Tayana on our go-to boat buying website. We rented a car and drove up to La Paz from Cabo San Lucas with only an hour to spend on her before our flight home.  Once we got there it took us less than five minutes to realize she was the one. It was truly love at first sight! (Read full story)

Agápe is a 1984 Tayana Vancouver 42', hull #93.  She is a true blue water cruiser, and has already seen much of Mexico, the South Pacific, and beyond. When we began looking at boats, we hoped to find a vessel already equipped for cruising, (water maker, solar panels, good sail inventory, fresh rigging, etc.). We also knew we needed a boat with large tanks for fuel and water, as well as lots of storage for the long passages we are hoping to someday make. Most importantly we needed to find a boat within our budget!

We found everything we were looking for and more tucked inside this solidly built hull. Agápe holds 200 gallons of water and 120 gallons of fuel, with plenty of other storage. She not only came with a water maker, and solar panels , but she came with a generator, back up sails, all the electronics we need, freezer, hookah, dive equipment, spares for everything, a dingy with outboard and so much more.

The name: Agápē: is selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love, the highest of the four types of love in Greek language (the other three being, Eros: physical, sensual love. Philia: friendship or brotherly love. Storge: a family bond love.) Agápe is an unconditional love that sees beyond the outer surface, accepting regardless of flaws, shortcomings or faults. It’s the type of love that everyone strives to have for their fellow human beings. This kind of love is all about sacrifice as well as giving and expecting nothing in return. The translation of the word agápe is love in the verb – form: it is the love demonstrated by your behavior towards another person. It is a committed and chosen love.

Description from Tayana's website of the Tayana V42:

"Putting thoroughbred performance into performance cruisers has never been easy. In his Vancouver 42, however, Robert Harris has made it look easy. Combining rugged good looks, liveaboard volume, and go-anywhere capabilities in a boat that still ghosts racily in single-digit wind strengths is quite a feat. The formula for making husky boats sail like-sylphs is one that Harris has explored in depth throughout his decades at the forefront of sailboat design. Oversimplified, that approach involves a very slippery hull, a very powerful sail plan, and a set of jumbo underwater foils that are as efficient as they are big. Although the Vancouver 42 displaces close to 30,000 pounds, Harris has made it possible for her to carry that weight with considerable grace."

For us Agápe is home. She is a safe and trustworthy vessel that will ferry us to the less seen places of the world. At first, as for many other boat owners I am sure, Agápe was just fiberglass, stainless and canvas, but now she is a part of the family. LOA: 41 ft 8 in Beam: 12 ft 6 in LWL: 33 ft 0 in Length on Deck: 41 ft 8 in Minimum Draft: 5 ft 10in Displacement: 29147 lbs Ballast: 11800 lbs Fuel Storage: 120 gallons Water Storage: 240 gallons
